Researchers from these institutions trust The LaTeX Lab
After formatting over 200 theses, we can tell you the single most common reason a thesis fails its format check: it's not margins or fonts. It's the bibliography. In roughly 7 out of 10 thesis projects we receive, the bibliography is the primary formatting problem - the citation style doesn't match the department's requirements, or the .bib file has malformed entries that produce warnings the student never noticed. We catch all of it.
4 Years of Research. 4 Weeks Lost to Formatting.
You defended your research. Your committee signed off. Now your graduate school tells you the margins are wrong, the TOC doesn't match their template, and the bibliography is in the wrong citation style.
Or maybe you're still writing - but you've been staring at a LaTeX .cls file for three days, trying to get the title page to match your university's formatting guide. Meanwhile, your submission deadline doesn't move.
After formatting hundreds of theses, we've identified the five issues that account for nearly every format-check rejection:
You didn't enroll in a PhD program to become a LaTeX developer. You did it to do research. Let us handle the formatting.
We Format Your Entire Thesis in LaTeX. You Get the .tex Files Back.
The LaTeX Lab is a specialist PhD thesis LaTeX formatting service. We don't do proofreading, language editing, or content review. We do one thing: take your thesis and deliver it in clean, submission-ready LaTeX, formatted to your university's exact specifications.
Send us your thesis in any format - Word (.docx), PDF, Google Docs, or a messy .tex file that won't compile - and tell us your university and department. We handle everything else.
One thing we've learned from working with 100+ university LaTeX templates: many of them haven't been updated in years. We regularly encounter .cls files from 2015 or 2016 that assume packages and font configurations that have since changed in modern TeX Live distributions. The result is a template that compiled perfectly for the student who graduated three years ago but throws errors today. When this happens, we patch the .cls file to work with current TeX Live while maintaining full compliance with the university's formatting specifications. Most students don't realize this is an option - they assume the template is broken and try to start from scratch, which is almost always the worse approach.
What's Included in Thesis Formatting
Full Chapter Structure
Every chapter formatted with consistent headings, subheadings, and numbering. Sections and subsections properly nested. Page breaks and chapter openings set correctly.
Front Matter & Back Matter
Title page, abstract, declaration of authorship, acknowledgements, table of contents, list of figures, list of tables, abbreviations, nomenclature - all formatted to your institution's specific requirements.
Bibliography & Citations
Complete .bib file with all references. Your required citation style applied (APA, Harvard, IEEE, Chicago, Vancouver, or any custom .bst). BibTeX or BibLaTeX - whichever your template requires. Every citation cross-referenced and verified.
This is where most thesis formatting projects get complicated. About 40% of .bib entries exported from Zotero or Mendeley have formatting issues - missing required fields (like DOI or publisher for @book entries), inconsistent author name formatting, or HTML artifacts left over from the export process that break BibTeX parsing. We clean every single entry by hand. We also see a recurring issue where students use biblatex syntax (\addbibresource) but their university template is configured for classic BibTeX (\bibliography) - or vice versa. Mixing the two systems is the #1 cause of the "bibliography not showing" problem we see from thesis clients.
Equations, Tables & Figures
Equations typeset in proper LaTeX math mode. Tables rebuilt using booktabs with correct alignment. Figures placed in float environments with captions, labels, and cross-references that actually work.
University Template Compliance
Your university's .cls file loaded and configured. Margins, fonts, line spacing, heading styles, page numbering, and caption formatting all verified against your institution's style guide. We've formatted theses for 100+ universities worldwide.
Overleaf-Tested Compilation
Before delivery, we compile your thesis in Overleaf and verify: zero errors, zero warnings, correct output. You receive the .tex source, .bib file, all figure files, the compiled PDF, and a README with compilation instructions.
Who This Is For
We serve doctoral candidates worldwide. Most of our thesis clients are based in the United States, Germany, Australia, and the United Kingdom, but we've formatted theses for universities across 30+ countries.

We Format & Compile
Your thesis is formatted chapter by chapter. Front matter, bibliography, appendices - everything. We compile in Overleaf and verify against your university's requirements before delivery.

What Happens After You Submit to Your Graduate School
Most universities run a format check within 1–2 weeks of submission. If the format checker requests changes, you can use your included revision rounds for any formatting adjustments. If your committee requests content changes that affect layout (adding a section, reorganizing chapters), we update the formatting at no extra charge within your included revision rounds. We stay with your thesis until it's accepted.

Some numbers from our thesis formatting work: of the theses we've formatted, zero have failed their graduate school's format check on the first submission after our delivery. The average thesis project involves us fixing 12–15 pre-existing compilation warnings that the student didn't know were there - warnings that don't stop compilation but can cause subtle issues like incorrect page references or broken hyperlinks in the PDF. And roughly 1 in 4 thesis clients comes back within 6 months for their first journal paper submission.
★★★★★
"My graduate school has very strict formatting requirements and I was running out of time before my defense. Perfectly formatted thesis that passed format check with zero revisions."
★★★★★
"I had a 210-page thesis with a lot of equations and a bibliography that wouldn't compile. Sent it over on a Monday, had a clean compiled PDF by Friday. The BibTeX errors alone would have taken me days to sort out myself."
★★★★★
"I wrote my entire Masters thesis in Word and had no idea how to get it into LaTeX for submission. They converted everything — tables, figures, references — and matched my university's template exactly. Passed the format check first time."
