Elsevier LaTeX Formatting - elsarticle Template

cas-sc. cas-dc. Editorial Manager Ready.

Your Elsevier journal wants LaTeX. You have a Word draft, a rough .tex file, or a PDF from a previous submission. We convert and format it using the correct elsarticle template, apply the right bibliography style, and deliver a .tex file that compiles cleanly on Editorial Manager - not just on your local machine or Overleaf.

Editorial Manager runs TeX Live 2022. Overleaf runs a newer distribution. A file that compiles perfectly in Overleaf can fail silently on Editorial Manager. We test for all of it before delivery.

72-hour standard delivery. Compiled and tested in Overleaf. Editorial Manager compatibility verified before we send it.

The Elsevier Templates We Work With Every Week

Elsevier doesn't use one template. They have multiple class files depending on the journal type, the submission stage, and whether the journal uses their Complex Article Service workflow. We work with all of them and know which one your journal actually needs - which is not always the one linked on the Instructions for Authors page.

elsarticle.cls - The Standard Elsevier Template

The primary document class for most Elsevier journals. Currently on version 3.4c (updated 2025). Supports three citation schemes: numerical (elsarticle-num.bst), author-year / Harvard (elsarticle-harv.bst), and numerical with author names (elsarticle-num-names.bst). Each scheme uses a corresponding bibliography style file.

Most authors download the template and pick a citation scheme at random. This is where roughly a third of Elsevier formatting problems start. Each Elsevier journal specifies which citation style it requires in its Guide for Authors - but the Guide often uses general language ("numbered references" or "author-date") without naming the specific .bst file. We cross-reference the journal's published articles to confirm the exact style, because the Guide and the actual production output don't always match. Using the wrong .bst won't stop your paper from compiling, but the production editor will flag it and send it back.

cas-sc.cls and cas-dc.cls - Complex Article Service Templates

Elsevier's newer class files for journals that go through the CAS workflow. cas-sc is for single-column layout, cas-dc for double-column. These templates handle more complex frontmatter than elsarticle - including structured author statements, graphical abstracts, and highlight bullet points. They're increasingly required by Elsevier's higher-impact journals.

If your journal's submission page asks for a "graphical abstract" or "highlights," there's a good chance it uses the CAS workflow and expects cas-sc or cas-dc rather than standard elsarticle. We check for this upfront, because submitting with the wrong class file creates formatting inconsistencies that the automated production system catches.

ecrc.sty - Camera-Ready Copy (Procedia Journals)

A small number of Elsevier journals are Camera-Ready Copy (CRC), meaning the author's formatted manuscript is reproduced exactly as submitted. The Procedia series is the most common example. CRC journals use ecrc.sty on top of elsarticle, with additional formatting requirements for logos, headers, and copyright notices. Getting the formatting wrong means your published paper looks wrong permanently.

Elsevier Journals & Subject Areas We Format For

We format for any of Elsevier's 60+ journals. If your journal accepts LaTeX, we can format for it - confirmed within 2 hours of receiving your journal name.

Life Sciences & Medicine

Cell, The Lancet, eBioMedicine, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Neuron, Developmental Cell, and 800+ Elsevier life science and medical journals. We apply the correct elsarticle citation scheme and verify frontmatter formatting for clinical journal requirements.

Physical Sciences & Engineering

Materials Science and Engineering, Journal of Computational Physics, Chemical Engineering Journal, International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, and hundreds more. Our most common subject area - we've formatted papers across every engineering and physical science discipline Elsevier publishes.

CAS-Workflow Journals (Graphical Abstract)

High-impact Elsevier journals using the Complex Article Service workflow require cas-sc.cls or cas-dc.cls. We format graphical abstracts, highlights, and structured author statements using Elsevier's required CAS markup - elements that don't exist in standard elsarticle.

Social Sciences & Economics

Journal of Financial Economics, European Economic Review, Social Science & Medicine, Journal of Housing Economics, and social science journals across all Elsevier imprints. Author-year (Harvard) citation style typically required - we verify the exact .bst file for your journal.

Procedia (Camera-Ready)

All Procedia series - Procedia Engineering, Procedia Computer Science, Procedia Manufacturing, and others. Camera-Ready Copy formatting with ecrc.sty on top of elsarticle. Your formatted manuscript is published exactly as submitted, so the formatting has to be right.

All Others & Custom

If your Elsevier journal has a template we haven't seen before, send us the .cls file or the journal name. We confirm support within 2 hours. Elsevier publishes across virtually every academic field - if they publish it and accept LaTeX, we can format for it.

What You Get With Our Elsevier LaTeX Formatting Service

We don't run a script. We apply the correct Elsevier template manually, verify every formatting requirement, and test against Editorial Manager before delivery.

Equations in Proper LaTeX Math Mode

Every equation typeset in correct LaTeX syntax. Inline math, display equations, multi-line derivations, AMS environments. Not images. Not MathML exports. Clean, compilable LaTeX that produces zero warnings.

Elsevier-Compliant Bibliography

Your references formatted with the exact .bst file your journal requires: elsarticle-num (numbered), elsarticle-harv (author-year), or elsarticle-num-names (numbered with names). Every BibTeX entry with the correct type and all required fields. We verify the \bibliographystyle declaration matches the .bst - a mismatch is invisible until the production editor catches it.

Figures & Tables to Elsevier Spec

Figures in float environments with journal-compliant captions and labels. All images converted to PDF or EPS - the formats Editorial Manager processes reliably (PNG handling is inconsistent on EM). Cross-references that resolve correctly. Figure resolution verified for Elsevier's print requirements.

Frontmatter Formatted Correctly

elsarticle has specific frontmatter commands for title, authors, affiliations, abstract, and keywords that differ from standard LaTeX. For CAS journals, we also handle graphical abstracts, highlights, and structured author statements - all formatted using Elsevier's required markup.

Editorial Manager Tested & Ready

Flat folder structure (no subfolders - EM can't process them), correct file type labeling for each upload item, no naming conflicts between files, all \includegraphics paths resolved. Compiled with --halt-on-first-error to catch warnings before they become EM failures. Your upload will generate a clean PDF on the first attempt.

Complete File Package

Main .tex file, .bib bibliography file, all figure files in EM-compatible format, compiled PDF, and a README with both Overleaf compilation instructions and step-by-step Editorial Manager upload instructions. 1 revision round included.

Complete Deliverable Package

  • .tex source file
  • .bib bibliography file
  • All figure files (PDF/EPS)
  • Compiled PDF (final output)
  • README: Overleaf + EM upload instructions
  • 1 revision round included

Why Elsevier Submissions Fail - and How We Prevent It

Elsevier has one of the most frustrating submission processes for LaTeX users. The template is straightforward. The problems start when you try to upload.

Editorial Manager runs TeX Live 2022. If you're developing on a local TeX Live 2024/2025 installation or on Overleaf (which updates annually), package and class file versions can differ. Your file compiles locally but crashes on EM. The most common culprit: elsarticle.cls version mismatches. When this happens, we include the specific .cls version that matches EM's distribution in your submission package - a fix most authors never discover on their own.
No subfolders. Period. Editorial Manager cannot process any directory structure. Every file - .tex, .bib, .bst, .sty, figures, tables - must be in a single flat folder. If your Overleaf project has an /images/ subfolder (which most do), EM will fail with "file not found" errors. We flatten the structure and update all \includegraphics paths before delivery.
File type labeling matters. EM requires you to label each uploaded file with an item type. Your .tex file goes under "Manuscript." Your .bib file also goes under "Manuscript" - not "LaTeX source file," which is what most authors select. Getting this wrong means EM ignores your bibliography entirely and produces [?] marks throughout the generated PDF. We include explicit upload instructions with every delivery.
Image format traps. EM handles PNG files inconsistently - some journals accept them, others fail silently. We convert all figures to PDF or EPS, which EM processes reliably across all journals. We also strip any directory paths from \includegraphics commands, because EM can't resolve relative paths even in a flat structure.
Overleaf compiles with errors. EM doesn't. Overleaf is forgiving - it generates a PDF even when your .tex file has non-fatal errors. Editorial Manager stops on the first error and produces only an error log. A file that looks "fine" in Overleaf may be carrying hidden warnings that become fatal errors on EM. We compile with --halt-on-first-error and resolve every warning before delivery.
